Capabilities
What we do — invest, advise, and hold
Somerville Partners runs two disciplines under one roof. We put the firm's own principal capital to work in private businesses, and we advise the founders, boards and family offices who run capital. Five capabilities describe how that works in practice.
Principal Investment
We commit Somerville Partners' own capital to private businesses — as a minority or majority partner — and hold those positions for the long term, with no fixed fund clock forcing a sale.
What this includes
- Direct equity into established, profitable businesses and selective earlier-stage opportunities
- Minority partnership stakes alongside founder-operators who keep control
- Majority or control transactions where succession or transition calls for it
- Buy-and-build platforms, with follow-on capital to acquire and integrate add-ons
- Holding-period support: governance, finance, talent and strategic capital decisions
When to call us
- You want a long-term capital partner who will not push you to sell on a timetable
- You are a founder considering partial liquidity while staying in the business
- You are exploring succession, management buy-out or a platform build-up
Venture & Growth Capital
For businesses raising institutional capital, we invest ourselves and we help arrange the round behind us — bringing co-investors, structuring the deal and getting the terms right.
What this includes
- Participation in venture and growth rounds as a direct investor
- Capital-raising support: building the materials, the data room and the narrative
- Introductions to a curated network of co-investors, family offices and funds
- Term-sheet negotiation, capital-structure design and round architecture
- Bridge and pre-emptive financing strategy for companies between rounds
When to call us
- You are raising a priced round and want a lead or a credible co-investor in the corner
- You need help finding the right investors, not just any investors
- You want the terms stress-tested before you sign
Advisory & Capital Raising
Strategic and financial counsel for founders, boards and family offices. Sometimes that means a transaction — a raise, a sale, an acquisition. More often it means helping a principal decide what to do, and then doing it well.
What this includes
- Strategic reviews: where to play, where to invest, what to stop doing
- M&A advisory on the buy-side and sell-side, including carve-outs and disposals
- Capital-raising mandates, from positioning through to close
- Board-level counsel on governance, reporting and capital allocation
- Independent diligence and "second opinion" reviews of major decisions
When to call us
- You face a decision large enough that a considered outside view is worth the cost
- You are contemplating a transaction and want honest counsel before engaging a process
- Your board or family office needs an adviser who has put capital at risk themselves
Portfolio Stewardship
We hold and actively steward a portfolio of operating companies across the United Kingdom and the Gulf — including European Technical, our UAE technical-services business. Stewardship is the unglamorous work of compounding, done properly over years.
What this includes
- Active governance: boards, reporting cadence, risk and capital discipline
- Executive hiring, mentoring and succession planning
- Group-level finance, treasury, systems and controls
- Operational improvement programmes and cross-company scale benefits
- Add-on acquisitions and portfolio reshaping over time
When to call us
- You run a business that would benefit from a hands-on, long-term owner
- You are an operator who wants partnership rather than a distant financial sponsor
- You would like your business to become part of a wider, well-run group
Family Office Counsel
Quiet, long-horizon counsel for principals and family offices managing concentrated wealth — direct deals, asset allocation, governance and the succession questions that determine whether wealth endures across generations.
What this includes
- Sourcing and diligence of direct private deals alongside, or on behalf of, the family
- Asset allocation and portfolio construction across private and liquid holdings
- Family governance, decision-making frameworks and reporting
- Succession and inter-generational transfer planning
- Co-investment alongside Somerville Partners' own principal positions
When to call us
- You manage a concentrated position and want a discreet, peer-level sounding board
- You want access to private deals alongside an investor with aligned risk
- You are structuring family governance ahead of a generational transfer
